Youth altar servers, boys and girls, assist the clergy in the liturgy including weekend Masses, funerals and weddings. This is a wonderful ministry, an act of service that requires our young people to be present and focused, humbly assisting at the altar, and learning and growing in the servant role. Altar Servers are not just showing up and filling a volunteer slot, but are responding to a call from God and offering assistance with the liturgy in gratitude for this special responsibility. By their service, altar servers can mature and grow in grace, and are called to be leaders amongst their peers.
Children are eligible to train as servers at CTK if they are registered and active members of the parish, have received First Communion, and regularly attend Mass. New servers attend one 1-hour training session then serve on the altar several times before being promoted from Novice to Skilled servers. We have a large number of servers, so the commitment is approximately once every 5 weeks–but there are frequent opportunities to sub for others. Servers in 5th grade and above (and who have been servers for a full year) can elect to train as wedding and funeral servers in the spring of each year. In the 8th grade, servers begin training as Lead servers, a role they assume in high school.
